Income tax & take-home pay

The brackets announced in the February 2026 Budget, applied properly — progressive slices, your age rebate, then UIF. What is left is what you actually get.

How your tax was built

South Africa is progressive at the margin, not on the whole. Each slice of income is taxed at that slice's rate — which is why the marginal rate printed above is never your actual burden.

What changed on 1 March 2026

Budget 2026 lifted every bracket and rebate by 3,4% — the first inflation adjustment since 2023/24. The rates themselves did not move: still 18% at the bottom, still 45% above R1 878 600. The primary rebate went from R17 235 to R17 820, which puts the tax-free threshold at R99 000 a year for anyone under 65.

If your salary grew faster than 3,4%, you climbed a bracket anyway. That is bracket creep, and it is a tax increase that never appears in a Budget speech.

Three things this calculator cannot see

If you are self-employed, you do not pay PAYE at all — you pay provisional tax twice a year. This calculator still gives you the annual liability, which is the number you should be putting aside monthly.

Where the tax year boundaries sit

The 2026/2027 year of assessment runs from 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027. Income earned in that window is taxed on these tables, no matter when you file. Filing season for individuals opens later in the year, and the deadline for provisional taxpayers is generally the end of January.
